According to the severity of manic or hypomanic symptoms the bipolar affective disorders are subdivided into bipolar I disorders and bipolar II disorders.
Bipolar I disorder
Bipolar I disorder is characterized by the occurrence of episodes of depression and of mania.
Bipolar II disorder
Bipolar II disorder is characterized by the occurrence of episodes of depression and of hypomania.
